Well that was an easy way to surprise Lee. This was the second time over the summer vacation they’d seen each other, and it’d been a few odd months since they began dating.

The pair had been comfortably situated on Mai’s bed, the both of them dozing off after a morning walking around Diagon Alley, restocking what few school supplies they needed and getting lunch while they were out. Lee had been close to falling asleep, until he heard Mai say what she did. That got his eyes open real fast just out of surprise.

“What brought that on?”

Not that he was opposed to what she said on the contrary, she got his heartbeat going a few paces faster than it’d been a moment ago, but he hadn’t expected her to say it out of the blue like this. He’d sit up if she sat up, but for the moment his head had merely gotten picked up and Lee was staring at his girlfriend a bit incredulously.

The young Prince wasn’t happy with his sister, but that’d become standard for the two of them. Azula was the master of forging emotions at the drop of a hat (namely to coerce Ursa into making Zuko play with her, still one of his least favorite activities), so her saying that she hated him had both surprised him and not surprised him. They weren’t exactly cuddly siblings to say the least.

But when Ursa had overheard Azula say such a thing, of course there’d been an admonishing from the Fire Lady. And the second she walked off again, Azula told him what she just said; that it wasn’t an act. Zuko knew she loved messing with him, but this was a new one. Probably best it was just the two of them out in the courtyard, Mai and Ty Lee weren’t at the Palace for a change not that Zuko was complaining about that either, crazy girls could stay away for all he cared.

“I don’t even care, go ahead and hate me all you want.”

And there went Zuko storming off, his dagger looked like better company right about now. At least it’d only aggravate him if he couldn’t do well practicing with it.

The Fire Lord was quite content where he was. They both seemed to be in one of those ‘half-awake but so comfortable you can’t bring yourself to move’ situations. His chest was pressed to her back, and Zuko’s nose and lips were resting gently on Mai’s neck, arm slung around her waist. He was a happy Zuko, quite content.

Until one of the attendants hesitantly knocked on the door and said the little one year old Princess had woken herself with crying and was currently inconsolable. Needless to say, one of the young parents needed to get up to see to their daughter.

And Mai had decided it was Zuko’s turn.

He’d get up with a sleepily reluctant groan, but not before pressing a quick kiss to his wife’s cheek. Next time this happened, Hitomi was her child.
